Suburbs at the Centre

The schools (I.C Valente, I.C via Ferraironi, I.C via dei Sesami, IIS. G.Ambrosoli, I.C M.Gandhi, I.C Laparelli, ITT.Bottardi and Cpia 2) participating in the MIUR Programme “School at the Centre” in collaboration with Rome’s 5th District, the City of Rome, and MIUR’s National Observatory for Intercultural Education and Integration have organised a national seminar addressing “Suburbs at the Centre: schools and local areas in a multicultural context.”

The seminar will be held on Wednesday, April 19 (9 am – 5pm) at the Istituto comprensivo G. B. Valente (Via G. B. Valente 98).

The word “suburb” is often associated with difficulties related to urban life and multicultural issues, but are schools in the suburbs really more fragile or at risk? Or are they more dynamic and open on account of their complexity? How can we concretely transform this “urban issue” into an opportunity?

The objective of this seminar is to promote and exploit ideas, experiments and energy coming from the suburbs. They are trials for the future, attempts to erect bridges to promote exchange and interaction amongst associations and institutions and strengthen good practice networks amongst a city’s schools. Schools and associations working in Palermo, Naples and Milan will bring their experiences to the seminar.

Valentino Catricalà, Artistic Director of the Media Art Festival, will participate in the 4th work group: Art for Integration and Inclusion (cinema, radio, video, new technology).
