The three-year “Smart&HeartRome” Programme, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the City of Rome, which will be held at the Rome “Città Educativa,” also entails the development of seven phyrtual innovation gyms in the city’s suburbs. Rome’s “Città Educativa” will be transformed into a permanent digital education hub for all citizens. Furthermore, the phyrtual innovation gym model will be extended to city areas with social unease and inequality to strengthen the role of school as a guarantor of sustainable development for the entire community. The project will be presented on Monday, September 13 at 11:00 am at the Istituto comprensivo Melissa Bassi in Tor Bella Monaca.

The three-year “Smart&HeartRome” Programme, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with the support of the City of Rome, aims to promote social inclusion, the right of all citizens to quality education and full participation. The aim is to bridge the opportunities gap, which the Covid-19 emergency has widened even further in poorer contexts, though an educational ecosystem based on synergic action between school, university and educational community.

“A smart city is not only capable of experimenting innovative technological solutions, but also to value human capital through inclusive action that leaves no one behind. These actions must generate significant social and cultural transformation, but also sustainable and scalable innovation processes,” explains Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

Over the next three years, the programme aims to equip suburbs with seven phyrtual innovation gyms, based on the successful model at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale (innovationgym.org), and transform the Rome Città Educativa into a permanent hub for digital education for all citizens. Activities will address four main axes:

  • New Technology for Everyone – experiment with useful technology such as e-gov services, etc.
  • A Solidary City – educational programmes and projects for fragile categorties (elders, foreigners, unemployed, etc.)
  • Social Innovation and Development – a platform to identify local issues and develop social and civic innovation projects to solve them, involving associations, agencies and local companies.
  • Youth in Transition – original orientation and tutoring courses for youth not studying or working, to help them become self-entrepreneurs.

The first three innovation gyms will be developed in three schools in Rome (Districts 4, 6 and 109. The gyms will promote soft and hard skills, with a robotics centre and coding and digital manufacturing labs: Istituto comprensivo Via Poppea Sabina a Casal Monastero, Istituto superiore Carlo Urbani in Ostia and Istituto comprensivo Melissa Bassi in Tor Bella Monaca. A network with local organisations and the main universities in Rome will create programmes to contrast educational poverty, reduce school dropout rates, orient NEETs to new and more efficient educational or professional courses, promote lifelong learning and provide a space for debate and growth for the entire educational community. The project will be presented to citizens on Monday, September 13 at 11:00 am at the Istituto comprensivo Melissa Bassi in Tor Bella Monaca.
