STEAMedge is developing a European profile for teachers ready to tackle the digital and green transitions
What skills do teachers need today to guide pupils in a world where technologies, careers and environmental challenges are changing at an ever-increasing pace? This is one of the questions that gave rise to STEAMedge, the European project working on a new model for teacher training, integrating STEAM approaches, sustainability and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and drones.
A few months after its launch, the partnership is now getting down to the nitty-gritty of designing the first tools for the STEAMedge Academy. At the heart of this work is the Competence Framework, the European framework of competences that will define what it means to be a STEAM teacher prepared for the challenges of the future.
The framework is taking shape based on an analysis of nine European reference frameworks and will be further developed through consultation with teachers, public decision-makers and experts from the business sector in the various countries involved. This is a crucial step, as it is precisely from this map of competences that the training programmes, self-assessment tools and micro-credentials will be derived, which will gradually be made available to educators.
A toolkit for using AI in teaching
In parallel, the partnership is developing the STEAM AI Toolkit, a shared collection of artificial intelligence tools designed to support teachers through the various stages of the educational process: from learning to content creation, right through to reflection on teaching practices.
It is therefore not merely a question of introducing new technologies into the classroom, but of helping teachers to understand their possibilities, limitations and applications, integrating them into an interdisciplinary approach geared towards sustainability.
The work continues on the basis of what was initiated at the Madrid meeting last June, when the partnership began designing over 15 teaching modules, together with the assessment and skills mapping tools that will be incorporated into the European virtual learning environment.
A European community for teacher training
STEAMedge involves universities, schools and educational organisations from various European countries in a three-year programme that will run until the end of 2028. The aim is to reach at least 750 teachers, support 100 of them through personalised pathways, award 200 micro-credentials and build a community of practice comprising at least 300 members.
The Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the Italian partner alongside Roma Tre University, is contributing to the development of the Competence Framework, the piloting of training programmes and the involvement of the network of Italian schools.
The challenge is to develop a training programme capable of evolving alongside schools: not merely to update teachers’ technological skills, but to interlink digital technology, science, creativity and sustainability, so that teachers themselves become key players in the transformations currently underway.
