School at the Post Office

The new alliance with Poste Italiane, the Italian postal system, has lead to the creation of new Grandparents on the Internet courses organized at post offices to bring digital literacy for over-sixties everywhere possible.

Pilot editions will kick off in six Italian cities: Ascoli Piceno, Asti, Mantua, Naples, Palermo and Rome.

Ascoli, Palermo and Rome will be the first to begin on July 7 in specially equipped classrooms at the post offices.

In Rome, the first lesson will be held at the Via Lenin Post Office in the Trullo neighbourhood from 10 to 12. Each grandparent will be helped by a student tutor. Nearly all the knowledge volunteers come from the IIS Leonardo da Vinci School and are coordinated by Prof Maria Cataldo.

One of the students, Grandma Azzurra, is a perfect interpreter of life long learning. She took one of the first Grandparents on the Internet courses in 2003 and now, at age 79, she is back for a refresher course on new technology and on-line services.

In Palermo, the course will be held at the Via Roma 320 Post Office from 11 am to 1 pm. Most tutors attend the IIS Duca degli Abruzzi School and are coordinated by Prof Teresa Meli with the precious help of Leda Parisi, who has recently relocated to Sicily. The youngest tutor is a thirteen year old from Palermo, while the eldest student is 89 year old.

In Ascoli Piceno, IIS E. Fermi Headmaster Patrizia Palanca is directly involved in the courses with the help of professors Donatella Talamonti and Rossella Ciccanti. The course will be held at the post office on Via Francesco Crispi 4 from 10 to 12.
