RomeCup 2018 – The Winners

RomeCup 2018: social robots at the Campidoglio. The Awards Ceremony for the 12th edition of RomeCup, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale event organised in collaboration with the Rome Campus Bio-Medico University, were held at the Campidoglio “Protomoteca” Hall.

This year, in addition to the traditional robot competitions (Soccer, Explorer, Rescue, On Stage, Cospace Rescue), there also were a series of new challenges: creative contests with universities (Agrobot, NonniBot and Cobot) and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni (MUX), as well as the Open Innovation Challenge developed with Lazio Innova. Moreover, “The Robot I’d Like” was presented with the recommendations by young men and women for companies.

The winning teams in each category received prizes after the final competition phases involving 135 teams from 45 schools in 4 countries (Croatia, Italy, Malta, Slovakia). The awards were presented today in the Campidoglio “Protomoteca” Hall by Flavia Marzano, “Roma Semplice” Councillor, Raffaele Calabrò, Rector of the Rome Campus Bio-Medico University, and Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director, Fondazione Mondo Digitale. All of the RomeCup partners were also present.

An award was presented for each category:

In the Mix User Experience (MUX), in collaboration with the "Human+. The Future of Our Species" Exhibition promoted by the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the award went to "Inside the Geometry-Double Language,” a virtual reality project by artist Chiara Passa that will be developed for the Media Art Festival (May 17-19, 2018).

Moreover, the Rome Campus Bio-Medico University also held the Open Innovation Challenge, the final session of the DigiLife Strategy Workout, which involved multi-sectorial teams on five challenges, including that proposed by the Rome Campus Bio-Medico University: "How to provide updates to relatives of first aid patients?" The winning project - "Calm & Track" a smart bracelet to access patient information – will receive support from Lazio Innova (main partner) to develop a prototype and compete for the final €20,000 prize for the most innovative bio-medical service [see news: Open Innovation Challenge].

How can we create trust around social robotics? The results produced by “The Robot I’d Like” survey, coordinated by Vittoradolfo Tambone, Bio-ethics Professor at the Rome Campus Bio-Medico University, with university and high school students, were presented yesterday.

The survey provides important “advice” for companies by young men and women. In order to increase trust in technology, we need greater trust amongst ourselves. Robots must be efficient communicators, both in our houses and in dangerous professions. They must not have a role in governance and should probably not be anthropomorphic. Above all, however, they must be controllable [see news: The Robot I’d Like].

Other partners of the 12th edition of RomeCup include TIM, Olivetti, Enea, MSD Italia, Unindustria, Masmec and Inail, with Radio Rai 1 and Studenti as media partners.

The event was held with the patronage of Roma Capitale – “Roma Semplice” Council, Regione Lazio and the American Embassy in Italy. Projects twinned with 12th edition of RomeCup include: Make:Learn:Share:Europe (Erasmus+), Mathisis (Horizon 2020) and Mix User Experience - MUX in collaboration with the Palazzo delle Esposizioni.
