Something is finally changing and the protagonists are women. In 2010, all-female innovative start-ups were 9.1% of the total, while by 2014 they reached 15.4% for a total of nearly 600 enterprises.

The most widespread activities in female enterprise include software production and ICT consultancy (24.3%), research & development (17.4%) and ICT services (13.7%). The data can be found in the Impresa in Genere Report by Unioncamere.

The key word amongst female enterprise activities is innovation. Between 2010 and 2015, the number of enterprises related to the digital sector increased by 9.5% as opposed to 3% of the total. In absolute terms, female enterprise in the ICT sector has increased by 1800 units, increasing from 18.700 in 2010 to 20,500 in 2015.

The Coding Girls Project promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the American Embassy in Italy in collaboration with Microsoft promotes passion for innovation directly in school, where girls learn about developing apps, tools, services and videogames.
