Robots Attend Dance School

In Italy, very few female students choose to pursue a technical education and those who do are often rather shy. They tend to avoid practical participation in lab activities with all the consequent negative results that this has in a hands-on field. Are these objective difficulties or are they the result of an ingrained mentality, of a gender discrimination that is difficult to overcome?

Over the course of past year, Luisa Zamparini and Paolo Torda, two teachers at the Itis Von Neumann School in Rome, have successfully experimented the Roberta Programme.

This Programme teaches young women to programme robots to dance, allowing them to become familiar with the technical terminology by means of a common pastime: dance. The results became evident after a couple of months …

So, what can a dancing robot do? The best opportunity to find out is RomeCup2009, where Dance is featured as one of the competition categories.
