"No Worries" Technology

She defines herself as a “full time grandmother” because she looks after her one-and-a-half year-old grandson. Nonetheless, Ms. Immacolata, 64, has accepted to return to school and attend the TeleMouse course along with other elderly friends from the Serpentara Elderly Centre.

We are in Rome’s IV Municipio that has 11 elderly centres with over 6000 members. Four structures - Cifariello, Petroselli, Cinquina and Serpentara – have already been equipped with Internet Corners, PC workstations provided by Telecom Italia for the elders.

Four primary schools and four secondary schools have organised digital literacy courses:

  • 164° C.D. “Torriccella Nord”
  • I.C. "C. Levi"
  • I.C. "Via C. Perazzi"
  • I.C. "Uruguay"
  • S.M.S. "E. Majorana"
  • S.M.S. “C. Piva”
  • I.T.I.S. "A. Pacinotti"
  • I.T.C. "C. Matteucci"

Immacolata attended the TeleMousecourse during the 2009-10 school year at Itis Pacinotti where she was helped by an eighteen year-old tutor called Kevin. She didn’t have any particular problems understanding the use of software and PCs. It was hard to memorise all these new notions, but with Kevin’s help and a precious notebook where she jotted down all her notes, Immacolata made it. And know she had decided to transfer this model to her house and jot notes down so that she can learn about everything technical! She can even tune in the new digital channels on the TV … all she needs is her notebook.

Kevin is very happy about his student’s proficiency and her active role, especially considering that she had begun from zero.

"We,” Kevin points out, “have knowledge that we can transmit. We grew up with technology and take it for granted … we can help other people use these tools, step by step … it’s a small effort that can produce great results.”
