Mandatory Innovation

Almerindo Capuani, 72 years old was a retired engineer who led an active life as a consultant and coach. We shared a significant and exciting journey with this man who believed “innovation should be mandatory.” We knew about his health problems and were always amazed by his extraordinary and tireless generosity as an organiser. We found about his death from the newspapers.

Almerindo had a lot of ideas, too many at times, and this often caused confusion in our offices. “Will you speak to him, please. I’m in a hurry!”

“OK, but I only have 10 minutes to listen to him!”

And he would surprise us every time. His enthusiasm and unique contagious insistence led to many  great projects. He was tireless and never satisfied. He grabbed every opportunity to learn more and network with a curiosity and humility that we have rarely encountered. We will miss his phone calls and his sudden appearances at our offices, when he was in Rome with his family.

Here are two short interviews with Almerindo. The first was conducted by Fiammetta Castagnini a few months before the Global Junior Challenge 2015. Almerindo, who was visiting the Phyrtual Innovation Gym in Rome for the first time, explains how he came up with an idea - at a night club - that became a smart city project.

The second is a chat with Cecilia Stajano at the Kairos Centre in Teramo, the third hub of the National Network of Innovation Gyms [see news: The Third Node].

Italian schools need more people like him, generous and visionary ones. It was an honour to share a part of our journey with him.
