The most popular sport in the world has been chosen to raise public awareness about the role of science and technology. In 1993, a group of Japanese researchers created RoboCup, a football world championship for autonomous robots. The ambitious objective is to organize a match between humanoid robots and the world champion team by 2050.

This has fuelled an international collaboration between scientists and researchers who can use a popular sport like football and the RoboCup Junior to raise the awareness of the new generations on these issues. And our students have been world champions for two consecutive years in the football category in Brazil and China.

The Focus.it map reveals the most popular sports. Football is in green.

Football also provides opportunity for many solidarity initiatives, such as the “I Am There” football match, which has been promoted since 2010 by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. The solidarity football match provides an opportunity for young men and women to understand the conditions of refugees, of those who flee their country and will never be able to return. The match between Roman students and welcome centre guests was held last Monday to celebrate “International Refugee Day” in both Rome and Catania.

The aim is to keep the spotlight on this issue and exploit the world’s most popular sport to keep raising awareness about refugees every time that the Italian team plays, starting today in the match against Ireland at the European Championship. We need team play amongst all countries to counter this emergency. One out of every 113 individuals in the world is forced to flee; forced migration has never been greater.

So, as we await tonight’s match, here are some videos to keep emphasizing “I Am There.”
