Italian in the World

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Italian Department, the University of Bucarest has presented a honoris causa degree to linguist Tullio De Mauro for his contribution to the development of sociolinguistics and Italian dialect studies. “His Linguistic History of Unified Italy has always been a pillar in Romania,” explained department chair Ms. Oana Salisteanu.

During the conference that was held at the Italian Cultural Institute in Bucharest on “Italian in the World,” Professor De Mauro emphasised the strong tradition of Italian in Romania “brought about by reciprocal sympathy and trade interests”. In Romania, Italian is studied from elementary school to university and Romanian Departments also exist in Italian Universities.
