Grandparents on-line in Pordenone

School administrators and professors at the eighty-year-old Istituto E. Vendramini in downtown Pordenone, believe firmly in the principle according to which teaching leads to learning … students in first-degree secondary school are learning by teaching primary school students, while high school students are learning by teaching first-degree secondary school students.

“Learning by Teaching” is one off the main projects in the school’s curricular offer. However, to date, none of the children at the school have taught older students. Now, Project "Grandparents On-line" provides them with a completely new experience, a new test for students and teachers at the school, who act as digital coaches, introducing elders to the Internet and digital culture.

Twenty young men and women in lyceum years 3 and 4 have accepted the challenge of becoming tutors. They will explain the Internet and new technology to local over-65s, who now represent 25% of the population, with a prevalence of women (nearly 60%). And 30% of them are aged 80 and above.

This is a fundamental challenge in the second Italian Region in terms of elders after Liguria. The last population survey revealed that 24% of the population is composed by elders, four percent more than the national average. Over the next twenty years, the number of elders in Friuli Venezia Giulia will reach 27% by 2025 (338,602) with 18.5% aged 65 or older.

Friuli Venezia Giulia, is one of the most efficient regions in Europe for healthy and active ageing, as recognised by the European Commission. Now, the challenge is to introduce over-65s to the digital economy.
