Foreign Women are Model Students

Foreign Women are Model Students

Immigration into Italy features a growing presence of women. In the case of Ukrainian immigration, for example, women represent nearly 80% of the total. India and Pakistan represent the opposite end of the spectrum. In this case, women respectively represent 40.9% and 31% of the total. The presence of women is also low in the areas of Anzio and Lavinio.

In fact, the 22 foreign women attending the training courses for immigrants being held in these coastal towns is a great success. The women participated in the LC2 Project that features computer, Italian language and civic education courses organized in Lavinio by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the social cooperatives consortium Eriches 29, in collaboration with KStudio Associato, the Il Percorso Cooperative, the Hughes Linguistic Centre and the participation of the Province of Rome and the Municipality of Anzio.

Raheela, Sonica and Kamlesh are three of these women from Pakistan and India.

Raheela, from Pakistan, has been in Italy for nearly 20 years. She is married with to a man from Pakistan and has three daughters. The Italian course has allowed her to improve relations with her neighbours.
Sonica, from India, 37 years old, is happy that she will now be able to help her children (age 5 and 8) with their homework. Moreover, she has learned how to use a PC and uses Skype to speak with her distant parents.
Kamlesh, from India, is 40 years old. She manages an Indian food store together with her husband. A month and a half into the course, she has already managed to increase the number of her clients. She is now able to explain the different products in Italian and entice people to try Indian food.

According to the cultural operators and mediators present at the training courses, women are model students. They are more motivated and have a very positive attitude.

The courses take place at the Lavinio headquarters of the Provincial Police near Anzio, which ranks 6th amongst the first ten municipalities in terms of foreign presence in the Province of Rome. The LC2 - Language Culture and Computer: key skills for integration Project was made possible thanks to a call published by the Ministry of Interior (Department for Civil Liberty and Immigration – General Direction for Immigration and Asylum) for projects addressing the actions delineated in the European Fund for the Integration of Third Country Nationals 2007-2013.
