The first Maker Space in a Municipal Roman library is at the Biblioteca Fabrizio Giovenale. The project is promoted by the Goethe-Institut in Rome in collaboration with Biblioteche di Roma, while the initiative is organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.
Bibliomakers, as the area is called, is equipped with digital manufacturing tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, plotters, soldering irons and a new creativity centre for all citizens. In this way, the library becomes a true factory of ideas. In Germany, for example, the Civic Library of Koln, a project partner, implemented digital manufacturing areas many years ago.
Bibliomakers is based on the experience of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale Fab Lab in Rome. As part of the Phyrtual Innovation Gym, which has become an important area for exchanging ideas and driving innovation, the Fab Lab is attended by makers, artists, professionals and young people of all ages.
The FMD runs the area at the Fabrizio Giovenale Library, providing assistance to users and organising labs for families and schools. All the activities held at the library will be presented at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale stand at the Maker Faire.
As part of its Creativity 4.0 project and thanks to its long collaboration with Biblioteche di Roma, the Goethe-Institut will fund the new Makerspace start-up and keep it going. The objective shared by all partners is to develop a prototype that can be replicated in other libraries and public areas. Thanks to the collaboration with the Book Forum, some course are also open to teachers and librarians.
