The Elderly in Europe

 

Two days in Brussels to compare the condition of the elderly in Europe. The meeting promoted by the

European Federation of Retired and Older People

(Ferpa) will open on February 26 with a work session dedicated to information technology for the elderly.

Two presentations are scheduled:

Alfonso Molina, Professor of Technology Strategy at the University of Edinburgh, will present the consolidated experience of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in creating activities for the digital inclusion of the elderly. In particular, Silver (Stimulating ICT Learning for Active EU Elders) in the frame work of the EU Action Programme for Permanent Learning, provides the perfect context to export the Fondazione Mondo Digitale’s successful Grandparents on the Internet
Programme to Spain, Romania, Belgium and the United Kingdom. An overview of the policies supporting e-inclusion will be given by Paul Timmers, Head of the e-Government Unit, DG Information Society of the European Commission. Following the presentations, the floor will be open to contributions by delegates and participants to present the situation in their own countries.

 

The second day, scheduled for February 27, will be dedicated to the social problems faced by the elderly and the issue of poverty.

In Europe, one out of every five people is over sixty. By 2050, the number of individuals who are older than 65 will increase by 70, while individuals over 80 will rise by 170%.
