Giovanni Forconi, President of Auser Toscana, set the debate rolling by underlining the importance of involving the new generations in projects addressing the elderly through a wider conception of the culture of learning and participation.
The debate held during Terrafutura for the presentation of the Memorandum of Understanding between Legambiente and Auser also touched upon lifestyles as related to climactic changes and new individual rights, notions addressed by Vittorio Cogliati Dezza, the national President of Legambiente.
The memorandum, based on active involvement of the young and the elderly, is a successful inter-generational model that the Fondazione Mondo Digitale has been testing for a long time, as pointed out by Cecilia Stajano, coordinator of the “Grandparents on the Internet: a click for togetherness” Project promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, Auser and Spi CGIL. The Grandparents on the Internet model, started by the FMD in 2003, has helped train over 9.000 elders and involved more than 5000 tutors and 650 coordinating teachers in the schools.

“It all started with our attempt to change the world,” explains Michele Buonomo, President of Legambiente Campania, which promotes the “Orti Urbani” Project (Urban Vegetable Gardens) in Pontecagnano and Eboli. The elderly find great satisfaction in cultivating these vegetable patches and it helps them integrate in society. Moreover, it creates a true generational bridge with the young. The Challenge? One thousand vegetable patches in Campania.
