The Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the Province of Viterbo are present at Medioera – Festival of Digital Culture to launch the “Grandparents on the Internet in Tuscia” Project. The project will provide digital literacy courses for the over-sixties in the school of Viterbo and the province. Students will be in Piazza del Gesù in Viterbo from July 16-21 to provide a taste of technology to all interested elders.

The goal is to promote some of the objectives of the Italian digital agenda: digital competences and social inclusion. This is the context in which the Grandparents on the Internet in Tuscia initiative – a digital literacy project for over-sixties – is promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the Province of Viterbo for the 2012 European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity Amongst Generations.
Students from 6 schools in Viterbo, Civita Castellana, Vetralla and Nepi, coordinated by professors, will teach over 500 elder citizens to use a PC, new technologies, e-mail and on-line e-gov services. Thanks to the inter-generational learning model promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in 13 Italian Regions and 8 European countries, 16000 seniors have received their web surfing diplomas.
“The efforts of the Province have materialized through the collaboration between different generations so that everyone can keep up with the pace of modernity,” declared Paolo Bianchini, Social Policy and Youth Councilor for the Province of Viterbo.
During the Medioera Festival (July 16-21 2012) students will introduce elders to the “Grandparents on the Internet in Tuscia” Project with smart technology laboratories set up in Piazza del Gesù (Viterbo). Elders strolling through downtown Viterbo will have the opportunity to participate in digital pills - miniature didactic modules to quickly learn about the opportunities provided by the Internet – as well as participate in a fun treasure hunt devised by the students to learn about the secrets of the web. On Friday, July 20, 2012 at 7:30 pm, Councilor Paolo Bianchini and Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, will present the first certificates to the student tutors at the project stand.
The following schools are participating in the project: Liceo Buratti - Viterbo, ITSST Leonardo Da Vinci - Viterbo, IIS Orioli - Viterbo, IIS Midossi - Civita Castellana, Liceo Linguistico di Nepi, IIS P. Canonica - Vetralla. The courses for over-sixties will start again in September when schools reopen.
