The Breathing Earth

A large environmental installation that showcases the breath of the Earth through its fundamental elements: sea, light and atmosphereWe Lost the Sea by Federica Di Carlo (Rome, 1984) is an immersive-perceptive work that employs a subtle series of equilibriums to raise awareness on the Earth’s dramatic climactic situation

The installation, which is hosted by the Arsenale della Marina Regia in Palermo, is curated by Simona Brunetti, promoted by the Regione Sicilia Sea Council (Soprintendenza del Mare) and the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, and produced by Snaporazverein with the patronage of Palermo Italian Cultural Capital 2018.

Starting Monday, June 18, at 6 pm, the ancient “Fabrica della Real Marina,” which was a fundamental meeting point for the exchange of goods and ideas for many centuries, has been transformed into a timeless area in which to observe the vital processes of water, air and light that keep our planet alive.

Entering from the only access point, a slim ten-meter bridge erected in the shadows of the Arsenale, visitors (15 at a time) walk into an “other world” in which giant silver kites, representing wind and the atmosphere, fluctuate in space at various heights, constantly reflecting lights and producing a motion similar to that of sea waves.

The sea is also represented and conserved in the large cisterns, that hold the sea water of Palermo, a visual and cultural symbol of the local ecological situation. Usually placed on house roofs, these cisterns collect rain water to guarantee survival during periods of draught.

The project was followed by Valentino Catricalà, Artistic Director of the Media Art Festival for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale.
