“Data and Diagnosis: The Future Assisted by Artificial Intelligence”. Training day with the Rome Medical Association

Last Wednesday, 24 June, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale was a guest of the Rome Provincial Association of Physicians, Surgeons and Dentists (OMCeO Roma) for the event Data and Diagnosis: The Future Assisted by Artificial Intelligence. Over 80 healthcare professionals took part in a day dedicated to understanding AI and its impact on healthcare settings [see the news item Digital Healthcare and Artificial Intelligence],

Just as in the myth of Prometheus, who gave fire to humankind to enable them to adapt and progress, today’s healthcare professionals are faced with a new tool capable of transforming the way they work. Artificial intelligence does not replace the doctor: it becomes a tool, an ally, a modern ‘fire’ that can improve diagnosis, organisation and the quality of time spent with patients.

During the meeting (accredited with 3.9 ECM credits), Antonio Magi, president of OMCeO Rome, emphasised how vital it is for doctors to learn to manage AI, by understanding how it works, its limitations and its clinical and medico-legal risks. Only in this way can the technology become a genuine support in diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making.

Nicola Illuzzi, a councillor at OMCeO Rome, focused instead on personalised training made possible by AI: tools capable of identifying soft skills, life skills and learning styles enable the creation of more targeted pathways that are better suited to the needs of healthcare professionals, whilst also improving the doctor–patient relationship.

A shared vision emerged from the event: AI can be a valuable resource, but it requires awareness, expertise and a multidisciplinary approach. Like any powerful tool, it must be understood, regulated and used responsibly.

The event marks the start of a new collaboration between Fondazione Mondo Digitale and OMCeO Roma, which will continue with in-person and online events and the publication of a free, on-demand video course on the FMD Academy, dedicated to professionals from Italian professional bodies.
