100 Hours of Astronomy
 
The United nations proclaimed 2009 the International Year for Astronomy (IYA 2009), an event that features the participation of over 100 countries. In Italy, the reference organization is the National Astrophysics Institute (INAF) that has been officially delegated to act on behalf of the Ministry of University and Research and represent Italy within the international astrophysics community and coordinate all relevant activities.

Besides these global events to entice people to life their eyes towards the sky, there are various smaller local initiatives that have helped to make space observation a habit. This is what has happened in Rome. Ten years ago, the liceo classico B. Russell transformed its roof terrace into an astronomical observatory.
 
In 1999, the school became a Scuola polo nazionale for the Mpi-Miur Project "Students Show Us the Stars”, gathering and analyzing the data on light pollution collected by all the schools participating in the project.
