Smart & Heart Rome: inauguration of the Tufello Innovation Gym

Give shape to ideas through digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping, discover the masterpieces of art and literature with engaging and immersive experiences, bridge the digital divide with the intergenerational learning model. These are just some of the challenges addressed at the Istituto comprensivo Montessori in Tufello. Indeed, Rome’s “Municipio III” hosts one of the seven Innovation Gyms promoted by Programme "Smart & Heart Rome" and the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, with the support of Rome’s Department for Digital Transformation, to reduce inequality in Rome’s complex suburbs, combat educational poverty, offer timely responses to the training needs of citizens, from basic digital literacy to job skills and from digital transformation to lifelong learning, strengthening the role of schools for the inclusive and sustainable community development.

Inside the digital manufacturing lab, one of the areas set up in the new Innovation Gym, a corner is dedicated to mixed reality, thanks to our collaboration with Rai Cinema. With Meta Quest 2 visors, pupils can immerse themselves in the worlds narrated by literature, starting with Dante's Divine Comedy, a symbol of our country's linguistic-cultural identity, and then explore new educational content in the selection curated by Rai Cinema.

In the satellite Innovation Gym, created at the ITCG Matteucci, an original course, conceived in collaboration with the Physics Department of the Sapienza University of Rome, allows students develop projects to measure the quality of the urban environment (air, acoustics, lighting, temperature, etc.). The goal is to discover the holistic dimension of sustainability, from the individual to the system, and develop new skills in rapidly expanding professional sectors based on the alliance between digital technologies and care for the planet.
