Today's European summit on digital security and child protection
Today, Wednesday 19 November, Google Brussels (Ch. d'Etterbeek 180) is hosting Growing Up in the Digital Age, an international meeting organised by Google and YouTube to explore issues, policies and tools dedicated to the online protection of children and adolescents. This in-person event brings together experts, policy makers, European organisations and young participants to discuss how to protect, respect and empower the younger generation as they grow up in increasingly complex digital environments.
Representing the Fondazione Mondo Digitale are its Director General, Mirta Michilli, and Head of Design, Ilaria Graziano, who will be involved in various working sessions on artificial intelligence, age assurance and technological mediation.
The summit focuses on a number of issues that are crucial for the digital ecosystem:
- how to design products and services that are suitable for the development of children and adolescents;
- what tools to offer families for flexible and informed management of their relationship with technology;
- how to implement effective policies and protection systems that respect privacy and are consistent with the European regulatory framework;
- how to ensure that every child and adolescent can have a safer, more positive and educational online experience.
The day alternates between panels, keynotes, Q&As and breakout sessions with leaders from Google and YouTube, researchers, European institutions, organisations involved in child safety and representatives from the world of youth.
Sessions with Mirta Michilli
- “Can Bans Work? A Discussion”, focusing on the effectiveness of bans, the role of platforms and the need for balanced educational solutions.
- “Age Assurance and Age Verification: How to Find Balance”, a comparison between technological innovation, privacy protection and the responsibility of actors in the digital ecosystem.
Sessions with Ilaria Graziano
- ‘What AI Looks Like in the Classroom’, reflections on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in schools and the role of teachers.
- ‘The Role of Parental Tools in Facilitating Age Appropriate Experiences’, tools and strategies to accompany families and parents in digital mediation.
The participation of Fondazione Mondo Digitale brings to the attention of the European debate the experience gained in projects dedicated to digital citizenship, online safety, critical skills and the construction of educational environments that enhance the potential of technology without ignoring its risks.
