Artificial intelligence in schools. A short guide for teachers

Artificial intelligence in schools. A short guide for teachers

Artificial intelligence is already part of everyday life in schools. It is no longer a question of deciding whether to use it, but how to integrate it in a thoughtful, safe and pedagogically sound way. For the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, AI is not a neutral tool: it is a cultural environment that changes the way we teach and learn. This is why it requires educational leadership, clear governance and continuous professional development. When used correctly, artificial intelligence can enhance the quality of teaching.

We support schools with a model that brings everything together:

  • Putting people first: the final decision always remains human (human in the loop)
  • Governance and regulation: integration consistent with the AI Act, GDPR and MIM guidelines
  • Educational innovation: use of AI for personalisation, inclusion and the development of critical thinking
  • Transparency and shared responsibility: constant dialogue between schools and families.

A resource hub for teachers and school leaders

This page brings together continuously updated practical materials, a flexible framework, adaptable to different school contexts:

  • Mini introductory guide
  • Checklist for AI integration
  • Internal governance protocol
  • Tool evaluation sheets
  • Templates for school–family communication
  • Declaration of AI use for students

Training and support

Alongside operational models, we invest in teacher training through webinars, structured courses and communities of practice. Because technological innovation without expertise breeds uncertainty, whilst supported innovation builds trust.

We have also set up a dedicated helpdesk, a direct channel to ensure schools are not left to face complex decisions alone. School leaders, teachers and innovation teams can write to us for clarification on regulatory aspects (AI Act, GDPR, MIM guidelines); support in evaluating AI tools; and guidance on drafting or updating internal policies.

The working group

Marco Montironi (DPO), Francesca Sabatini (teacher, AI mentor), Valentina Gelsomini, Francesca Meini and Caterina Scotto Di Uccio. Miriam Pintore coordinates the ‘task force’ of young professionals trained through the Cybersecurity Seminars by experts from the University of Milan: they can assist school leaders and teams with risk analysis, the technical evaluation of tools, and the promotion of a culture of digital security and data protection.

The mini-guide

This guide, inspired by ethical, regulatory and inclusive principles, supports teachers, students and families in making an informed and critical use of AI, which enhances teaching, stimulates critical thinking and always keeps the individual and the educational value of relationships at the centre. Produced by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the Guide to the Use of AI in Schools offers tools, examples and best practices for integrating artificial intelligence into educational processes in a responsible and creative manner.

The guide is part of a wider initiative that also includes a policy on the educational use of AI, a summary infographic, as well as training courses, webinars and in-depth meetings for school communities.

Let’s use AI to create a more inclusive, creative and informed school. The future of AI in schools depends on us: let’s build it together!
