Field Trip to Scalo 5B

Grandparents and students will pay a special visit today to Scalo B, the first social workshop in Sicily. The Workshop, which is managed by the Palermo Fab Lab, welcomed 16 students from the Istituto Magistrale Camillo Finocchiaro Aprile, their Professor, Daniela Sortino, and a group of over-60s.

Young and old continue their joint experience as part of the project that aims to overcome the generational gap through reciprocal enrichment. On the one hand, young men and women have issues finding employment, while the elders suffer the digital divide that now regulates inclusion. However, all these issues can be overcome together, thanks to the exchange of competences.

This was a unique opportunity both for the students and over-60s to learn about the millenary Sicilian manufacturing tradition and learn about innovative working tools from around the world. The exhibition is hosted by Scalo 5B, a manufacturing workshop that united cutting-edge technology, craftsmanship and volunteering, as well as much more, in a 1000-square-meter area at the Mediterranean Fair.

The permanent exhibition is organised by designers, volunteers, inventors and craftsmen to provide visitors and professionals with technology, tools and devices, as well as a network and meeting place for craftsmen, technicians, students, thinkers and anyone else interested.

This urban regeneration and social support initiative, which was made possible thanks to the Palermo Council and funding by Fondazione con il Sud, aims to involve young and old generations to promote the exchange of knowledge and competences.

It was a perfect opportunity to compare the professions of the past and the future and to reflect on how to orient oneself in work and daily life and gap the distance between generations.
