Silence at School

“After travelling to Boston, I visited the anechoic chamber at the University of Harvard. Everyone who knows me has heard this story. I repeat it continuously. In any case, I heard two sounds in that silent room: a high-pitched and a low-pitched one. So, I asked the technician why I had heard two sounds when the room was supposed to be soundproof. “Describe them,” he said. I did and he answered: “The high-pitched sound was your nervous system at work, the low one your blood circulating.” There is no such thing as silence. Something always produces sound. [John Cage]

In her digital storytelling and sound design lab, Coach Fiammetta Castagnini [@Fiammetta_FMD] loves to start with a question: does silence exist in nature?

In her last post published on the Percorsi con i bambini Blog entitled "La scuola è come il silenzio… accade sempre qualcosa!,” Fiammetta describes the unexpected outcome of a course held at the Istituto comprensivo Telesio-Montalbetti in Reggio Calabria, the Story of D.
