A Robot Can Make the Difference

How can we eliminate the waste that crowds our sidewalks, streets and parks in difficult spots that garbage men often have difficulty reaching? Coordinated by Prof. Americo Guercini, students at the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Enrico Fermi in Rome designed, developed and tested Trashbot, a robot capable of collecting and sorting small refuse. During the lockdown, the students worked to develop the robot’s artificial intelligence system, which learned to distinguish and separate refuse (deep learning). Equipped with a robotic arm, sensors, speakers, led lights and visors, the robot is set to start working. The project also includes charging stations and a remote-control system to promote cleaner cities.

Project Trashbot was one of the finalists at the 10th edition of the Global Junior Challenge in the “Up to 29 Years Old” Category.
